Targeting the global market for hydrogen refueling solutions

Demand for hydrogen-based drive systems will rise sharply in the coming years, especially for commercial vehicles. Bosch expects that by 2030, around one in eight newly registered commercial vehicles worldwide will have a fuel cell on board. With the cooperation now agreed on components for hydrogen refueling systems, Bosch and OMB Saleri therefore intend to expand their market positions in the H2 sector. The collaboration includes a licensing and development agreement for several products for hydrogen storage solutions at 350 bar and 700 bar pressure levels. Joint so-called simultaneous engineering teams are now further developing the existing products and optimizing them for large-scale production. Bosch’s goal is to offer components for hydrogen refueling solutions at competitive prices thanks to large volumes.

Bosch and OMB Saleri merge competencies

The cooperation brings together the know-how of both partners. The Italian technology company OMB Saleri from Brescia in northern Italy, for example, is considered one of the world’s leading specialists in components for hydrogen storage solutions. As a partner, Bosch benefits from development expertise, a modern H2 test infrastructure and test stations, and components that have already proven themselves in initial applications. In return, Bosch contributes its experience in the industrialization of innovative products as well as a global development and manufacturing network for large volumes.

Bosch is working on mobile and stationary fuel cells

Bosch is convinced of hydrogen as an energy carrier and is therefore making considerable advance investments. From 2021 to 2024, the company will invest a good 600 million euros in mobile applications and 400 million euros in applications for stationary power and heat generation. The portfolio for vehicles ranges from individual sensors to core components such as the electric air compressor and the stack to the complete fuel cell module.
