Sunfire to benefit from substantial IPCEI funding

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI) have named 62 large-scale hydrogen projects which are to receive government funding. Sunfire is one of the selected companies.

The scaling plans of the electrolysis company Sunfire get a further boost: The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and the German Federal Ministry of Transport have selected large-scale hydrogen projects to be supported within the framework of a joint European hydrogen project (Hydrogen IPCEI – Important Projects of Common European Interest). Together with four other Saxon companies, Sunfire was successful. More than 230 applications were received by the ministries.

“For us, this is not only good news, but excellent news. As an electrolysis company, we are currently in the hot phase of our development. Our products are mature, we are ready for large-scale production. In order to scale, we need to invest now. The funding from the German government will help us continue on our path at the same pace we’ve been going.” Nils Aldag, CEO Sunfire

With this funding, the Federal Government is implementing an important measure of the National Hydrogen Strategy. “We are thus taking a major step on the road to climate neutrality for our economy,” Peter Altmaier announced in a press release. The Federal Minister of Economics focuses on the steel and chemical industries, “where several million tons ofCO2 can be saved annually through these hydrogen projects.” Sunfire, whose electrolysers are already being used in both industries, is helping to achieve this goal with its products.

The German projects are funded within the framework of a European project together with up to 22 European partner countries. The aim is for the projects to be approved by the European Commission under state aid law before the end of this year. The BMWi, BMVI and the federal states are providing a total of eight billion euros.
